Step To It Lesson 2
This lesson should be incorporated on Monday of the second week of a 10-week period and will take the full class period. It is the
second of three lessons for the Step To It Exploration.
Today, you will:
- Guide students in using the on-line Step Tracker to input Week 1 step data.
- Help students review step data from Week 1 and calculate baseline.
- Have students set step goals based on national daily step averages and prepare them for tracking steps for 9 weeks.
- Discuss Step It Up activities from their journal.
Preparation
Activities
Step Tracker Activity
- Show students the Step Tracker.
- Enter their class name.

- Select their name from the menu.

- Enter password.

- Determine the class procedure for weekly data entry into the Step Tracker.
Everyday, students should track their steps in their journals and enter the numbers into the Step Tracker at the end of the week.
- Help students enter journal step data into the Step Tracker.
- Ask students to write the baselines from the Step Tracker in their journals.
Baseline Activity
- Explain the importance of a baseline.
- Use the baseline results from the Step Tracker as a tool to compare with the
national daily step averages. The national daily step averages are only guidelines… some students may have special needs or limitations.
Encourage students to set their own goals.
- Using their journals, have students write their end goals and compute how many steps they need to increase from their baselines. Using
the chart, they can write goals for average daily steps for each week to gradually meet their goals.
Step It Up Activity
Review Step It Up activities in the
Student Journal and
determine which activities to do as a class as additional learning activities.
Graded Summative Assessment
If you need a graded assessment, there are at least two opportunities for grading in this activity.
- Participation grade: Give grades based on successful entering of Student Journal data into the Step Tracker.
- Documentation grade: Give grades based on written feedback provided in journals through the Q & A section or through the Step It Up activities.
Formative Assessment
For this lesson's
Consensogram, consider one of the following items:
- I know how to create a baseline for measuring my steps.
- I understand how to track my steps every week.
- I feel comfortable recording accurate information from my pedometer.
